Sam, Ollie and I caught a little afternoon glass off at El Porto a couple of days after Christmas.
I started shooting these portraits a few weeks ago. It didn’t start out as a planned project but everyone seems to be responding well to the images so I’ll see where it goes. When I’m surfing with my boys, I am usually the first one out of the water and most definitely the first one dressed. I’m usually waiting around while they get out of the water and watching them struggle to get out of their wetsuits. It’s pretty funny watching them hopping up and down in the parking lot or rolling around in the backseat in various states of undress. I usually have a camera with me and there’s always some grip stuff in the trunk of my Volvo wagon so one morning I clamped this small painted backdrop to the tailgate and took a few portraits while waiting.
After Debbie left the house this morning at 5:15 to go swimming I got up at 5:45 and went downstairs to start my yoga practice. As I was laying out my mat Henry followed me to read one of the many Harry Potter books he has strewn about the house. He was soon followed by Simon who doesn’t like to sleep alone. I put him on the couch with a blanket and a few books to look at and told him, “Daddy is going to do yoga while you look at books.” He didn’t like my idea. He wanted to play hop on pop. So, we exhale, adjust and play hop on pop with a little yoga mixed in. Next to join the livingroom club is Sam, who usually doesn’t get out of bed till minutes before he leaves for school on his skateboard. He is commmenting (complaining) that it’s cold this morning and asks if I will start a fire. We’ve had the hottest October on record in Los Angeles and November is shaping up no different. But he’s right, there is an edge of coolness in the air this morning. So, I go out to the woodpile to gather kindling and firewood and see this beautiful mushroom. Mushroom are strange. I despised them as a kid but have learned to love them as an adult. Our kids are extremely fussy when it comes to mushrooms. They love to saute them with a little olive oil, garlice and white wine and will put them on their hamburgers but DO NOT try to put them into any dish like macaroni and cheese or omelettes. I don’t know what it is. Maybe they think we are trying to trick them into eating them – It’s strange. Anyways, the wood burning stove is going, I think everyone is up and the day has begun…
