In Hanalei the main highway is a 2 lane street. On the mountain side of Kuhio Highway there are taro fields and on the ocean side there is shave ice. There couldn’t be a more odd pairing in all the world. The words natural, sustainable, nutritious, indigenous and Hawaiian come to when I think of taro. Shave ice is… refreshing… to a point, colorful… in strange sort of way, and Hawaiian.
Because we all hardly ever go into town at one time and because to rent a mini van for 6 weeks is really expensive, for the past couple of years we have rented a 5 passenger car. But last week we old school double buckled and crammed Â all 7 of us into the little Nissan and went to theÂ Hanalei Canoe Club for a Luau fundraiser. Pig, poki, and potato salad preceded by a little paddle around the Hanalei river mouth. On the way home we had the little ones duck down and hide as we passed 2 police cars on the road.
