_MG_0543Those of you who follow this blog know I mainly use it as a vehicle to muse about existence and rarely use it to promote myself. But, just found out that one of our promo pieces was chosen as one of the Best of 2015 by A Photo Editor. You probably know that Rob Haggart gets a ton of promo pieces every day and feel pretty honored. You might notice the new  Ted Catanzaro 2016 imitation wood grain calendar strategically placed in a blatant attempt at some shameless promotion and the large number of hashtags I’ve added that is supposed to reach a larger audience. AND if you act now, you might be able to get one to adorn your desktop throughout the year!

It’s always a hoot when you can ask our nations’ poet laureate to show me their silly walk and he understands that you are talking about Monty Python. Great shoot for U.C.L.A with Juan Felipe Herrera.

This is Julian and his girlfriend. I know they weren’t surfing but they were skating down the street in Venice holding hands and I asked them to stand in for a quick portrait._MG_4902 _MG_4897

I started shooting these portraits a few weeks ago. It didn’t start out as a planned project but everyone seems to be responding well to the images so I’ll see where it goes. When I’m surfing with my boys, I am usually the first one out of the water and most definitely the first one dressed. I’m usually waiting around while they get out of the water and watching them struggle to get out of their wetsuits. It’s pretty funny watching them hopping up and down in the parking lot or rolling around in the backseat in various states of undress. I usually have a camera with me and there’s always some grip stuff in the trunk of my Volvo wagon so one morning I clamped this small painted backdrop to the tailgate and took a few portraits while waiting.

In the car this morning I heard Back on the Chain Gang on the radio. I love the way Chrissie Hynde sings those lines, “I found a picture of you…oh oh oh oh. Those were the happiest days of my life.” I’ve got boxes of pictures of Debbie mostly polaroids, mostly pregnant, some standing in to test the background, light and exposure. The Pretenders song is about getting back on your feet after a loss- loved one, of freedom who knows- it’s just a song. Yeah, this year has been a struggle with lots of things but Debbie has held me together and without her I don’t know where we would be.

Debbie_PolDebbie showing off her belly. This polaroid was taken at Vicki Pearsons studio in the Brewery in Los Angeles about a month after our house burned down in the Malibu Fire.

Is there a connection with the Giants winning the World Series and the Republications gaining control of the House and Senate? Probably not but thought I would just throw it out there. Squinting on the t.v screen I could almost imagine it was the Dodgers playing in the fall classic instead of the Kansas City Royals…

…in line ordering an espresso, I tell the barista, “There’s a fly eating your almond croissant.” His bearded, mustached face doesn’t know how to react. I want to pick him up and turn him upside down like Wooly Willy. In front of me, two men paying for macchiatos decorated with dollops of steamed milk that resemble simple yet elegant floral patterns-  no two exactly alike- they have shaved legs and tattooed arms like stained glass, wearing strechy pants sharing bike lane road rage stories.

_MG_2610I don’t really get dressed up for Halloween, but this year I thought long and hard to come up with an easy creepy costume and I came up with Terry Richardson. I groomed my facial hair for a 10 days, a simple stop at Party City for the glasses, white seamless, flash on camera, plaid flannel shirt, the trademark thumbs up and voila!     Halloween___002 Halloween___007 Halloween___005 Halloween___004 Halloween___003 Halloween___001   Ollie wanted to be Little Wayne, but after decorating his face and arms with hand painted tattoos and traipsing a dread lock wig through middle school complained it was too hot and itchy, decided on The Joker for the second year in a row. I think this was my 3rd or 4th straight year I’ve painted the Heath Ledger inspired villain on one of my children’s face. “Why so serious?” This year it was just Ollie, Simon (dressed up in a borrowed George Washington costume) and I haunting our usual neighborhood between Pico and Ocean Park Blvd. We realized it was too early too start Trick or Treating since it wasn’t quite dark yet and nobody was answering their doors. To kill some, we went to Poom Thai and ordered pad see ew, rice and I bought a beer from the liquor store next door. After dinner, it was dark and we returned to the business at hand. We had a great night ending with George Washington and Terry Richardson having to pee really badly so they went in an alley behind a dumpster. Ollie was banging on trash cans making a ruckus, a light from a motion detector went on and I told Simon, “Let’s finish quickly, I don’t want to be caught dressed like Terry Richardson going pee in an alley with George Washington.”

I haven’t posted much of anything since that big swell back in September.  It’s not that I haven’t been doing anything or taking pictures. Sometimes it’s just too hard to make sense of what is going on around me. Sometimes it’s too hard to understand the places I’ve been. This was one of those times.

I can’t remember 5 straight days of waves so consistent and so big. I usually go early in the morning when it’s not crowded in the water and the sand is cold and the parking lots haven’t filled up with beach goers. This swell was different. It was so crowded at all times and there was so much stuff going on around me that I just didn’t care. I heard the current was super strong but I didn’t notice anything special as I paddled my board into the line up. And then, on a wave, the crowds and some of your worries seemed to fade away almost disappear for a few seconds as you speed by people, riding life’s liquid fabric on a foam board encased in and fiberglass.

Twilight- The madness of moths stirred from the mint in the yard. Muddled with lime and sugar and vodka in a attempt to understand the past, prepare for the future and soften the present.
