I’m thinking this might be the last rain of the season and perhaps the last fire too. Seasons come and seasons go.

No matter how much you hydrate or listen to your coachs’ words of encouragement, it’s always tough being down at haltime 12-1.

Still sailing on this sea of photography. Rebranding from Ted & Debbie to Ted is taking a lot longer then I thought. Going through an “old” list from 2014 of contacts to send a new promo to and realizing that 1/3 of these people are now photographers themselves. Welcome, and good luck.

Before Simon could give his oral animal report in his third grade class yesterday he had to have an emergency early morning visit to the dentist for a little oral surgery to have a cavity filled and another tooth extracted- luckily it was a baby tooth. His report was on the Bongo, a form of antelope that lives in parts of Africa, and he worked so hard on it and was so ready for his presentation that after he came home from the dentist, Debbie emailed his teacher who said that he could do it the following day, but Simon being the tropper he is went back to school and was the first one in the class to give his report!

There’s been great waves lately with el nino fueled swells hitting our beaches week after week. But, with every time I paddle out there’s a sense of loss to the motions I’m going through. That first step into the cold water is not numbing but a wake up call- a telling finite feeling that makes me sad. Surfing three days in a row used to make me feel strong and vitale. Now the repetition of paddling and standing up on my board seems to aggravate or bring to life some new unexplored pain in my shoulder, back or neck.

In the back of my house I adjust, and take one of the longboards instead of a shorter one, because no matter what, after you’ve caught a wave till there’s no wave left, and you paddle back to the line- up with that stupid smile on your you face, and sit on your board looking at the horizon waiting for the next set, you know you’ve pressed a reset button of sorts that makes it all worth it and say to yourself, “One more wave.”

This is the final installment in the brief life history of the little maul oak tree I purchased from Theodore Payne Nursery back in the late fall of 2008 to commemorate the election of Barack Obama as the President of the United States. I actually didn’t get it planted in the ground until the day Hillary Clinton was sworn in as Secretary of State. Whether planted in the ground or in a pot, no matter what I did, I couldn’t make this tree thrive. I just barely kept it alive. Obamas’ uplifted face proclaiming “HOPE” on a decal on the back of my Volvo is now a faded white rectangle. I’m not blaming him. I think we all know how hard it is to get anything done today let alone with the lack of support he is getting with the loudest voices in the Senate trying to cram the entire nation into their angry time machine to repeat the mistakes we’ve made before. But wait, I’m getting a bit too political here. This is about my little oak tree that I envisioned, yes and HOPED my kids could climb, maybe fall out of and slightly fracture an arm, lob water balloons at unsuspecting speeding cars from, have birds build nests in and hatch their eggs.

Sadly, the maul oak tree is dead. I just put it in the green waste bin to be recycled with the rest of our compost to be picked up early Wednesday morning with the rest of our bins. So what do you do? You start over again. You get your butt out of bed every morning, wake your kids up for school and warm up the espresso machine and hope the things you do  make a difference.

As Debbie was helping Simon and Ollie with their homework I’m just getting around to posting these photos I took of Sam the day before he he drove back to Iowa to finish his last semester at Grinnell. The small framework we set down as parents hopefully helps them maneuver in their path they are carving out for themselves.

_MG_0543Those of you who follow this blog know I mainly use it as a vehicle to muse about existence and rarely use it to promote myself. But, just found out that one of our promo pieces was chosen as one of the Best of 2015 by A Photo Editor. You probably know that Rob Haggart gets a ton of promo pieces every day and feel pretty honored. You might notice the new  Ted Catanzaro 2016 imitation wood grain calendar strategically placed in a blatant attempt at some shameless promotion and the large number of hashtags I’ve added that is supposed to reach a larger audience. AND if you act now, you might be able to get one to adorn your desktop throughout the year!

The default tone of my iPhone (radar) goes off at 6:00 am. I start my morning routines by walking upstairs to try to wake Henry and Theo up for school and rouse Simon as I tell him to, “Go cuddle with Momma.” I walk back downstairs to the kitchen and see the guinea pigs (Zsu- Zsu and Wayne) up on their hind legs begging for their vitamins. I dole out their dose as I turn on NPR and start up my espresso machine. My machine is warming up as I look outside the kitchen window. It’s still dark and hard to believe the sun will rise soon. In the eastern sky there’s a small light. I can’t tell if it’s a planet or a star. Is it emanating or reflecting light? I don’t know because I don’t have my glasses on. The voice on the radio, I can’t tell if it’s David Greene or Steve Inskeep, says that David Bowie has died of Cancer at the age of 69. I think to myself this must be a star.

Another year of keeping some sort of magic alive. Some may say we’ve bitten off more then we can chew…maybe. But Christmas came and went and I had the whole family here and surfed some windy close out waves in the afternoon and the sun was out.
